Saw this article and wanted to comment on it since you asked for info.

I live in Raleigh, NC and used to work in Morrisville, NC.  I have eaten at this Taco Bell/KFC fiasco (very busy and too small) restaurant quite a few times.  I am not sure as to the company that designed this device. I did not notice any other company markings, but I can tell you that it runs a Microsoft Windows software package, my guess would be XP or 2000.  I know this because one day it crashed while I made my purchase and ate $5 of my money.  After waiting for the manager to figure out what was wrong and reboot the machine, I watched the boot sequence.  Plain MS with Intel based processor.  I am not sure what POS software they were using, but it is probably homegrown.
There are actually 2 devices there and at least one of them was down at any given time.  They are nice and a good idea...but like many things, poor implementation.
