I just ran into this photo of a order taking terminal in one of those Taco Bell/KFC hybrids, and found it very fascinating. Of course I knew that these terminals exist, but I have never actually seen one.
Customers of this restaurant can enter their order and pay —the terminal accepts cash and credit cards— at this terminal and go to the counter to pick up their food. By using the order terminal this restaurant streamlines their order process, and thereby minimizes waiting times for the customers. Of course, such a process works best for fast food restaurants, where speed is more important than quality.
Can anybody tell me who the manufacturer of this terminal is, and what software it runs?

Hi Jereon,
Saw this article and wanted to comment on it since you asked for info.
I live in Raleigh, NC and used to work in Morrisville, NC. I have eaten at this Taco Bell/KFC fiasco (very busy and too small) restaurant quite a few times. I am not sure as to the company that designed this device. I did not notice any other company markings, but I can tell you that it runs a Microsoft Windows software package, my guess would be XP or 2000. I know this because one day it crashed while I made my purchase and ate $5 of my money. After waiting for the manager to figure out what was wrong and reboot the machine, I watched the boot sequence. Plain MS with Intel based processor. I am not sure what POS software they were using, but it is probably homegrown.
There are actually 2 devices there and at least one of them was down at any given time. They are nice and a good idea…but like many things, poor implementation.
Hope that helps kill your curosity.
Daniel Lewis
PS: Yes I got my $5 back.
